The aims and intention of Science.

At Valley End C of E Infant School, Science is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live. Science has changed the way we live our lives and is central to many aspects of day to day life. We take an investigative approach to the teaching of science, encouraging children to ask questions, devise investigations and solve problems. We want all pupils to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world. It is our intent that all children should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and use of science. They will be equipped with scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science today and for the future. We aim to encourage children to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes.

The National Curriculum for Science aims to ensure that all pupils:-

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
  • Through building on knowledge and concepts, they should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

It is our intent to make sure pupils develop a secure understanding of each key block of knowledge and concepts in order to progress to the next stage. As a school, we believe that through Science, we can promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding and an appreciation for life in modern Britain.


The implementation of Science and how it is taught.

For pupils to achieve the requirements in Science, teachers at our school will help, support and encourage them to;

* Acquire, develop and extend significant knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts.

* Prepare for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world.

* Ask and answer scientific questions about the world around them.

* Initiate investigations and develop scientific and investigative skills including observing, measuring, predicting, hypothesising, experimenting, communicating, interpreting, explaining and evaluating.

* Develop an inquiring mind using critical and creative thinking.

* Develop the use of scientific language, recording and techniques.

* Become effective communicators of scientific ideas, facts and data.

* Acquire first-hand experiences of scientific activities, both as an individual and as part of a group.

* Foster concern about and actively care for our environment.

* Build on children’s prior scientific knowledge and encourage a deeper understanding.

* Work with different outside comapanies on STEM projects to bring elements of the science curriculum to life.

In Early Years science is taught through the ‘Understanding the World’ strand of the Early Years foundation stage curriculum. This states that;

‘Children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur and talk about changes.’

In key stage 1 Science is taught as both a discreet subject and as part of cross curricular topics.

In year one the pupils will learn about; plants, animals including humans, everyday materials and seasonal changes.

In year two the pupils wil extend their knowledge gained in year one and learn about; plants, animals including humans, uses of everyday materials and living things and their habitats.

Learning and Teaching Strategies

The pupils will be taught in a variety of styles in accordance with the schools teaching and learning policy. Teachers plan to suit their children’s interests, current events with creative teaching styles, the resources available and the use of any support staff. Wherever possible activities will be practical, and children will learn from first-hand experience. Teachers will asisst children with their thinking, knowledge and understanding to build secure foundations and through discussion help to remedy any misconceptions.

During activities children will be working scientifically to develop the following skills:

  • Ask deeper questions recognising that they can be answered in creative ways.
  • Observe closely, choosing different types of equipment.
  • Perform tests and investigations to check their knowledge and understanding.
  • Identify and classify objects using different criteria.
  • Use their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions (both simple questions and questions of more depth).
  • Gather and record data in a range of different ways to help in answering questions that they can interpret.
  • Ask people questions and use simple secondary sources to find answers.

The impact of Science and how it prepares children for their next stage of education.

The majority of our pupils in Early Years Foundation achieve expected level of scientific understanding which then lays a foundation of understanding for further scientific learning. The majority of Year two pupils achieve the expected standard in Science at the end of Key Stage One.

Pupils at Valley End develop a very secure understanding of each key block of  scientific knowledge and concepts in order to progress to the next stage of their education.
