Year 2 content

At the end of Year 2 most children should:

• have an awareness of the properties of some materials and be able to manipulate them with some skill (for example to cover a box neatly with paper)
• be able to carry out an investigation into how to make moving parts (for example hinges, winders and axles)
• be able to carry out an investigation into how to solve a problem (for example strengthening paper by rolling it into tubes)
• be able to adapt designs for hinges and winders to use on their own models
• be able to select appropriately from a range of tools, materials and techniques
• be aware of and be able to follow safe procedures
• be able to evaluate their own and the work of others
• be able to incorporate features such as symmetry in their designs
• be able to incorporate folding and cutting techniques into their designs
• be able to assemble, join and combine a range of materials and components
• be able to evaluate their work and identify areas that could be improved
• be able to produce designs independently
• be able to work on collaborative projects, valuing the ideas of others
• test their products and make judgments on their performance when compared to others
• evaluate their designs and products independently
