Year Two – Content

By the end of the year most children should:
• record from first-hand observation, experience and imagination and extend their ideas for different purposes
• represent observations, ideas and feelings and design and make artefacts using previously taught techniques
• ask and answer questions about the starting point of their work, and develop and extend their ideas
• be able to combine and organise elements of colour, pattern and texture, line and tone, shape, form and space for different purposes
• be able to develop and apply styles and techniques of some famous artists and craftspeople in their own work
• be able to use a range of materials and processes, including ICT, with confidence
• be able to investigate art, craft and design in a variety of genres, styles and traditions through original/reproduction form or using the internet
• be able to work independently or in collaboration with others on projects in two and three dimensions and on differing scales
• be able to evaluate their work and identify what they might change or develop in their future work.

Colour and Tone
By the end of Year Two most children should:
• be able to use colours together to create the best effect and to show some perspective in their work
• know that colours can be used to represent mood, feelings and space
• be able to discuss which tones are likely to give appropriate effect
• begin to recognise that tone creates distance,(dark at the front giving depth).
• Know how tone is used to show light and darkness.

Pattern
By the end of Year Two most children should:
• Be able to create a motif and repeat the pattern using printing techniques
• Know that pattern can be developed as a way of describing the repetition of an image

Texture
By the end of Year Two most children should:
• Be able to represent texture in any media in both two and three dimensional forms

Line
By the end of Year Two most children should:
• Investigate how some famous artists use line
• Experiment with line to give a variety of effects in their own art work

Space, Shape and Form
By the end of Year Two most children should:
• Know which shapes can be used for different purposes and be able to choose the best shape for the task
• Think about shape and form when producing an observational drawing
• Be aware of size and shape created by three dimensional forms
• Know that three dimensional forms can be viewed from all sides and use this knowledge when producing their own three dimensional work
